Meet our massage therapy team

Joanne Annable and Laurie Pickles are registered massage therapists at Progress Physiotherapy. Contact reception to discuss availability, appointment length and current massage fees.

What does massage therapy involve?

Massage uses hands-on techniques to work with soft tissues. People may seek care for muscle discomfort, tension or relaxation, or as one part of a broader plan for their musculoskeletal needs.

Evidence-informed care is part of our approach at Progress Physiotherapy. Research supports short-term pain relief with massage for some conditions. Your therapist combines relevant evidence with your health history, preferences and goals to guide treatment.

Your first appointment

Your therapist reviews your health history and asks what you would like help with. Tell them about recent injuries, surgery, medications and other treatments. Together, you discuss the areas to address and a treatment plan.

Comfort and consent are part of the appointment. You can discuss clothing, positioning, draping and pressure before treatment, and ask to change or stop the treatment at any time.

Pressure should suit you

More pressure is not necessarily more helpful. Let your therapist know what feels comfortable and whether an area is too sensitive. Temporary soreness may occur; your therapist can explain what to expect and any relevant precautions.

Some health conditions or recent injuries require changes to the approach or medical input. Sharing an accurate history helps the therapist make an appropriate recommendation.

How does massage fit with physiotherapy?

Massage and physiotherapy are separate appointments and services. Some people use both while working toward their goals. With your consent, relevant information can help your care providers understand the wider plan.

Physiotherapy can address the movement, strength and activity progression your recovery requires. Massage may provide a complementary option for comfort and soft-tissue concerns, depending on your needs.
