Two ways to support the same goal
Hands-on techniques and exercise can serve different purposes within one rehabilitation plan. Your physiotherapist explains what each component is intended to change and checks whether it is helping.
Manual therapy may include selected joint movements or soft-tissue techniques to help with discomfort and movement. Exercise gives you a way to practise, strengthen and build tolerance between appointments.
What does individualized exercise mean?
We begin with your current ability and the task you want to improve. Your program may work on movement, strength, balance or endurance. We adjust the exercise, resistance, range and frequency to your presentation.
You do not have to be athletic or have a gym membership. Tell us about your home setup, schedule and confidence with exercise so the starting plan is realistic.
Where hands-on care fits
A physiotherapist may use hands-on treatment when the assessment identifies a reason for it. Techniques are discussed with you and adapted to your comfort. You can ask to pause or choose another option.
A useful short-term change in comfort or movement can help you participate in an active plan. We still review whether it translates into improved everyday function over time.
Progress without guesswork
Your physiotherapist explains the intended exercise response, when to modify the program and how to build on it. As your ability changes, the plan should change too.
For example, rehabilitation for difficulty on stairs may include relevant strength and balance work, followed by practising the task itself. The details depend on your assessment; an exercise that suits one person may not suit another.
Get started with an assessment
Exercise guidance and appropriate hands-on treatment can begin at your first visit. Follow-up appointments allow us to reassess and progress your program.

Your questions, answered
Do I have to use weights?
Only if they fit your goals and stage of rehabilitation. Exercise can use body weight, resistance bands, gym equipment or everyday movements.
What if an exercise makes symptoms worse?
Tell your physiotherapist. We can review the technique, dose and suitability. Follow the guidance given for your condition rather than pushing through an unexpected or worsening response.
