Acupuncture and dry needling.

Needling options considered within an individualized physiotherapy plan.

What are these treatments?

Both use fine needles, but the choice of location and treatment rationale can differ. Acupuncture uses selected points, while dry needling commonly targets muscle-related findings identified in a physical assessment. Dry needling does not inject medication.

At Progress Physiotherapy, these options are available with appropriately trained members of the physiotherapy team. Ask reception if you wish to discuss needling so we can arrange a suitable clinician.

Why might a physiotherapist consider needling?

The aim may be to help manage pain or muscle-related symptoms as part of a wider rehabilitation plan. At Progress Physiotherapy, our commitment to evidence-informed practice means using research relevant to the specific condition and needling technique, alongside your assessment and preferences.

Your physiotherapist will explain the reason for recommending a particular technique and what outcomes to look for. Needling does not replace the exercise, activity guidance or other care needed for your condition.

What should I expect?

We discuss the proposed area, intended benefits, risks and alternatives before treatment. You may notice a brief prick, ache or muscle response. Your clinician checks your comfort, and you can ask to stop at any point.

Temporary soreness, minor bleeding or bruising can occur. Less common complications include infection or injury to underlying structures; needling near the chest carries a rare risk of lung injury. Your clinician will explain the risks relevant to the proposed treatment.

Help us check suitability

Tell us about blood-thinning medication, bleeding conditions, pregnancy, immune-system concerns, skin problems and any previous reaction to needling. Mention a fear of needles or fainting so we can discuss your preferences and alternatives.

You have a choice

Needling is optional. We can discuss other approaches if you prefer care without needles. The plan remains focused on your function and goals, and any treatment should be reviewed for its usefulness.
